How to bet on the NFL.

When betting on the NFL games, there are three main ways to bet: the moneyline, total points and handicap/ spread markets. Nowadays you can also create parlays or a bet builder.

The Moneyline Bet.

This is a straightforward bet on the winner of the game.

The Total Points Bet.

This means you are betting whether the game will go over or under a certain amount of points that have been set by the book makers.

The Handicap or Point Spread Bet.

This means that one team should win by a certain amount of points, which is known as plus “X” points. It is also possible for the other team to lose by the same amount of points, which is known as minus “X” points. This handicap or point spread is created by the book makers to give a point advantage so that both teams are close to even money.   Handicap or Point Spread betting is the most common bet in the NFL and is where the most action takes place. The most common reason bettors choose the point spread is because you get a better payout than moneyline. Another reason this is a good bet is because the spread is decided by the book makers and this is based on an opinion and mistakes can be made, and this is where you can take advantage and make money.

Who has the best chance to win the Super Bowl 2024?

The Kansas City Chiefs are strong contenders for a Super Bowl three-peat due to their dynamic quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the steady leadership of head coach Andy Reid.

Despite challenges on offense, the Chiefs have an improved defense and also Mahomes' playmaking ability remains a constant threat. Their experience in high stakes games make them one of the favorites, with odds at +400

Close behind are the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills. The Ravens, with their explosive offense led by Lamar Jackson and a top tier defense, are primed for a deep playoff run.
Meanwhile, the Bills, with Josh Allen at quarterback and a balanced team, continue to be a strong threat in the AFC.

On the NFC side, the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers are the teams to watch.

The Lions, led by a rejuvenated offense and a promising defense, have gained momentum, making them a serious contender for their first Super Bowl appearance.

The 49ers with their strong defense and offensive weapons like Christian McCaffrey and Deb Samuel, are always a threat under coach Kyle Shanahan. Both teams offer intriguing paths to the Super Bowl, each with unique strengths to challenge the AFC powerhouses.

What are other popular NFL betting types?

When betting on the NFL games, there are three main ways to bet: the moneyline, total points and handicap/ spread markets. Nowadays you can also create parlays or a bet builder.

NFL Futures

An NFL Futures bet is made on events that will happen at the end of the NFL Season. One of the most popular NFL Futures bets is Which team will win the Super Bowl, but the markets are not just limited to which teams can win the Super Bowl but there are several other betting options available. Here are some of the most popular future bets you can place before and throughout the regular season:

  • Odds to win the NFC South Division

  • Odds to win the AFC

  • Odds to win the NFC

  • NFL Regular-Season MVP

  • NFL Defensive Player of the Year

  • NFL Regular-Season Win Totals

The hard part on these bets is they can sometimes take weeks and even months for the winner to be determined but the odds are typically inflated so if you win your futures bet, the payoff is usually worth the wait.

Parlays

A parlay bet is when you make multiple picks and bundle them together in one single ticket. Whether you are using the picks like moneyline, spread or total bets. The idea is to add more than one pick on a ticket in order to increase the amount of payout for the ticket.

Let’s use the three examples above from the common NFL bets to determine the payout and what you could win if all three bets were successful:

Saints -7 vs Falcons (-110)
Patriots Moneyline vs Jets (-160)
Cowboys-Giants UNDER 48.5 (-110)

The calculated odds for this parlay based on Odds Shark’s odds calculator are +492. If you bet $100 on this parlay and all three bets win, you would get a payout of $592, which is $492 in profit and your original $100 back.

Bet Builder

Bet Builder works similarly than creating a parlay, you need to combine a series of interconnected bets on one sporting event into a single bigger wager. Bet builder will enhance your odds and therefore create a higher potential profits.

You can also choose two events to occur within the same game for a correlated parlay. For instance, you can take the Cincinnati Bengals to cover the spread at +10 (-110) against the Cleveland Browns and add an UNDER 41.5 (-110) bet for that game too. The odds for this parlay are +265 and if both are successful, you would receive a payout of $365, which is $265 in profit and your original $100 back.

Player Props

In addition to team performance, you can also bet on individual performance within the NFL. These are also known as Player Props. For example, you can bet on whether the starting quarterback throws more or fewer yards than the line indicates. You can also bet which player will score a Touchdown in the match or how many catches your player will make. With these types of bets you are therefore less dependent on the entire team, but mainly dependent on the player on which you have placed your bet.

Teasers

NFL Teaser bets are a way of adjusting point spreads to be more in the bettors favor. Like creating a parlay, you would need all your bets to hit to win your ticket; However, you get to adjust the preset spread or total lines from the book makers to lower your risk level. Teasers usually start when you adjust the spread by 6 points or sometimes even as high as 15 points. The key is that you lower your risk by adjusting the spread that was set by the book makers, but at the same also decreasing the regular payout. The lower the risk, lower the payout.

Live Betting

Live betting has the enormous advantage that you can adjust your prediction in response to the course of the match. A player like Tom Brady can also have a bad day. That has a huge influence on the level of the Buccaneers. With pre-match betting you are the leapfrog, with live betting you can still place your bet knowing that Brady is out of shape.
